São Paulo – How to continue a family business at a time in which the founding partners can no longer take care of the business? What are the chances for this business and what is the best way for each company itself? These and other questions relative to family company management will be covered in the Corporate Governance and Family Succession Planning talk to be given by businessman and consultant Fernando Curado, to take place on the 14th of May, at 7:00 pm, at the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, in São Paulo.
“Brazilian companies are, mostly, family businesses. With the economic development that we had over the last 50 years, the main shareholders have aged, and it is necessary to learn what may be done with the business that was established,” said Curado.
According to the consultant, there are different routes to be followed according to the situation of each company. “Depending on the market in which you are. Sometimes, a businessman alone cannot deal with the growth and needs a partner,” he explained. “It may be transferred to an heir, partners with capital may be brought in, or an association with former competitors or sale of the company may be evaluated,” said Curado, pointing out some difficulties faced by family businesses.
Among the cases of family management that Curado considers successful in Brazil is that of Votorantim Group, which has been controlled by the Ermírio de Moraes family for 60 years, and that of the Vilela Setubal family, which controls Itaú Bank. “There is already talk about who is going to follow Roberto Setubal in the presidency, and Itaú is still growing,” he pointed out.
Turned to partners, directors and managers, the event at the Arab Brazilian Chamber is part of a cycle of talks whose objective, apart from informing, is to provide a networking environment among executives. The seats are limited and those interested in participating may approach the organisation about seats available. Enrolment is free.
