São Paulo – Students in six Arab countries may, up to the end of July, apply for participation in the Brazilian program for post-graduate scholarships. Enrolment is open and may be by people who study in countries with which Brazil has partnerships for educational cooperation, among them Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia. The programme is by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), under the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Foreign Relations and the Foundation for Improvement of Higher Education Students (Capes).
The scholarships, which are part of the Postgraduate Student Agreement Program (PEC-PG), are for masters and doctoral courses. Lessons begin in early march and enrolment may take place up to July 31st. For this, candidates may fill out their applications online on the Capes site, and send in the application, together with the documents, to the embassies of Brazil in each country. The results should be presented in December this year, according to information disclosed by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
The objective of the program is to increase the qualification of university professors, researchers, professionals and graduates in higher education in the countries with which there are agreements, a total of 54, in Africa, Asia, Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean. Among them, apart for the Arab ones, are South Africa, Argentina, Bolivia, Cape Verde, Cuba, El Salvador, Ghana, Guatemala, Guyana, Gabon, Ecuador, India, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Kenya, Paraguay, Congo, Venezuela and Eastern Timor.
For the master’s courses, the duration of the scholarship is 24 months. For the doctoral courses, 48 months. Candidates must be fluent in Portuguese, have a graduate or master’s diploma (in the case of the doctoral course) and present a letter of acceptance from a Brazilian teaching institution. Those selected receive a monthly wage and a ticket back to their country of origin in case they successfully complete the course.
