Brasília – Brazil’s 2017-2018 grain and oilseed crop is poised to reach 232.6 million tons, the second-highest output on record, the National Supply Company (Conab) reported this Thursday (10).
“Despite the 2.1% drop from last crop’s 237.7 million tons, the number is quite high compared to average national output, in regular weather conditions. This forecast is up 1.3% and some 3 million tons from the April crop survey,” Conab reported.
Soybean and maize outputs are expected to be the biggest, followed by cotton and second crop beans. Planted area is up 1.1% to 61.5 million hectares, the strongest number ever.
In Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) also released its agricultural output forecast. Conab works with crop-years, while IBGE makes calculations using yearly numbers. It said cereal, pulse and oilseed output will be 230 million tons in 2018. Should the estimate prove true, output will have dropped by 4.4% from 2017.
