Brasília – The Ministry of Social Development and Fight against Hunger of Brazil published Friday (16) a decree that allocates BRL 8.97 million (USD 1.86 million) for social assistance actions for immigrants and refugees. Fifteen municipalities across ten states will receive an emergency transfer of federal funds for the care of 3,738 people assisted by reception programs or spontaneous demand.
According to the UN agency for refugees (UNHCR), Brazil has now 65,811 people recognized in this condition and a little bit more than 155,000 applications under consideration.
The funds will serve for six months of care over the course of this year and were distributed as per the number of people that each municipality receives or will receive. They aim to pay for the work program and meet the needs of immigrants and refugees and their families in a situation of vulnerability and risk.
Each municipality must submit an action plan within 30 days, otherwise the funds will be recollected by the federation. And the accountability will be accompanied and supervised by the social assistance council of the cities.
