São Paulo – The Brazilian poet and professor Michel Sleiman will deliver a lecture at 7 pm next Monday 16 at the Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Center, the cultural arm of the Embassy of Brazil in Beirut, Lebanon. Entitled “Al-Andalus – East and West bond,” the lecture will address the work of Brazilian writers of Syrian and Lebanese descent.
The Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Center said Sleiman will deal with the reorientalization observed in the works of Brazilian authors who are descendants of Syrian and Lebanese immigrants whose families moved to Brazil in the 20th century. According to Sleiman, they constitute a continuum of Arabness and keep alive the idea of Al-Andalus and a moment when East and West formed a single unit. Al-Andalus designates a portion of the Iberian Peninsula that Muslims used to rule.
Sleiman was born in Santa Rosa, Rio Grande do Sul, the son to Lebanese parents who migrated to Brazil in the 1960s. He lived and studied in Beirut. The holder of a degree in Language and Literature, of which he is a professor at the University of São Paulo (USP), he is also the author of Ínula Niúla, a book of poems, and of essay collections A Arte do Zajal and A Poesia Árabe-Andaluza.
He currently coordinates workshops on translation into Arabic. Sleiman is also working on a new translation of the Koran, in addition to supervising research into Arabic poetry, literature and comparative literature. Sleiman holds a doctorate degree in Languages from the USP.
The lecture at the Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Centro will be delivered in English, from 7 pm to 9 pm. Admission is free and seats are limited.
