Brasília – Cargo throughput at Brazilian state-run seaports was up 3.2% in the first quarter of 2018, while privately-run terminals saw a decline of 2.3%. The numbers are from industry report informativo Aquaviário do 1º Trimestre de 2018, made public by the National Agency for Waterway Transportation (Antaq).
Antaq said 249.2 million tons of cargo were handled in Q1, with state-run ports moving 84.1 million tons and private ones handling 165.1 million tons. Total cargo handled is down 0.5%, or some 1.2 million tons compared with Q1 2017.
Solid bulk accounted for 61.8% of total Q1 cargo. Liquid and gaseous cargo made up 22.1% of all cargo handled, with shipping containers coming in third at 10.6%. Other cargo amounted to 5.5%.
Iron ore was the most shipped product at 87.5 million tons, with oil reaching 48.7 million tons, down 1.1% from Q1 2017. Maize and soy also ranked among the most shipped cargo.
Destinations
China was the leading destination, taking in 47.2% of total cargo shipped, at 68.9 million tons. Next came Malaysia at 5.1% and 7.4 million tons. The Netherlands came in third at 4.8% and 7 million tons.
