Brasília – Brazilian grain production is expected to reach 271.447 million tonnes, according to the 11th Grain Harvest Survey released this Thursday (11) by the Brazilian National Supply Company (CONAB). If the estimate of the 2021/22 harvest is confirmed, it will represent a growth of 15.9 million tonnes (or 6.2%) compared to 2020/21.
The maize crop is projected to reach 87.4 million tons in 2021/22. The amount would represent the largest harvest recorded in the historical series. Forecasts for soybean production are at 124 million tonnes, while rice is estimated at 10.8 million tonnes. Wheat stood out in winter crops, with a record production of 9.2 million tonnes, a 19.3% progress.
The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) also released its estimate this Thursday. Unlike CONAB, which makes projections for the crop year, the IBGE works with the calendar year. The institute projects a Brazilian crop of cereals, legumes, and oilseeds of 263.4 million tonnes in 2022. The estimate is 4% (or 10.2 million tonnes) higher than the 2021 harvest.
According to the research manager, Carlos Barradas, the growth is due to the increase in planted area and investments by producers who are expanding the grain cultivation area by 6.4% to 73 million hectares, an increase of 4.4 million hectares compared to 2021. “Producers planted more because global prices are very high, especially wheat, due to the war between Russia and Ukraine, major wheat producers and exporters,” said Barradas in a statement.
