São Paulo – Company Brasil Foods (BRF) has established a joint venture with Ireland’s Carbery group to process milk whey protein, according to a statement released this Monday (5th) by the Brazilian company. Each company will hold a 50% stake in the business. Total investment should be US$ 50 million and a plant will be built in Brazil to make protein ingredients from milk serum.
The plant will process the serum that originates from cheese manufacturing, using technology from Carbery, which is an established company in the field. According to BRF, the partnership is in line with its plan of leading the Brazilian cheese market, because the serum used will be taken from increased cheese output. The ingredients will be used in infant and sports nutrition, among other purposes.
The Brazilian company is the second leading milk consolidator in Brazil, operates 14 dairy processing units in Brazil, and one in Argentina. Carbery posts annual revenues of 257 million euros and employs over 500 people worldwide. The new unit should start operating in early 2014.
