Brasília – The Brazilian minister of Foreign Affairs Aloysio Nunes said this Friday (27) that cooperation between the BRICS cooperação entre os países do Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) could help prevent the trade war now threatening the globe. Growing protectionism from developed countries was one of the key subjects discussed during the 10th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.
“[The BRICS] are five important countries, key countries in their own continents, and by coordinating their actions and agendas, there is no question they can become a movement to deter this very worrisome trend,” he said.
Aloysio Nunes warned that the spread of a worldwide trade war can directly impact job creation and income in all countries, Brazil included.
The minister said the BRICS are ready to discuss, with the United States and other countries, changes to the rules enforced by the World Trade Organization (WTO), to make decision-making faster and more representative, but he argued that cooperation and dispute settlement mechanisms currently in place must continue to exist, since they are essential to the WTO’s work.
