São Paulo – The towels by Buddemeyer, the Santa Catarina state-based company of bed and bath products, arrived in 2011 in Saudi Arabia. The items shipped, however, are not the same ones that are sold in the Brazilian domestic market. They are of the “fitness towel” type, manufactured to be used in gyms.
“They are special projects, custom-made for each client. The towels we sell to them are lighter”, says Cibele Buddemeyer, the brand’s exports supervisor. The towels sold to the Saudis are custom made, manufactured according the buyer’s needs, in the 70 cm x 140 cm size.
According to Cibele, the company sells fitness towels to two distributors in the Gulf country. Per year, exports to Saudis account to 2% of the total shipped by the company abroad. The items are 100% cotton and all of them are white.
Besides the Saudis, Buddemeyer sells its products to the United States – the largest market of the company abroad –, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Austria and Russia. Per month, the company manufactures 1 million pieces, with 20% of output being shipped abroad.
Cibele believes that the dollar appreciation against the real can be favorable to increasing the company’s foreign sales. “We are much more competitive”, says the executive. According to her, Buddemeyer has the potential and productive ability to expand its exportations. “We are open to new markets”, she said.
Towels and bathrobes are the main items manufactured by Buddemeyer, which also makes bathroom mats, quilts, sheets, pillow cases and protectors, and slippers. The company also sells bed and bath sets for children.
Founded in 1937, Buddemeyer has plants in the cities of São Bento do Sul and Campo Alegre, in Santa Catarina. The company has 1,200 employees.
