Brazil took one more step in the direction of the South American-Arab Summit last weekend, during the World Economic Forum meeting in Jordan. During the talks Brazilian Foreign Relations minister Celso Amorim had with Arab leaders who were present, it was clear that the rising trade between both regions would be the main topic of the meeting, scheduled for Brazil in December.

During a visit to Jordan, during the World Economic Forum, Brazilian Foreign Relations minister Celso Amorim and League of Arab States secretary general Amr Mussa defined the details of a preparatory meeting for the Summit between heads of states of both blocks. The summit is scheduled for December this year.

One of the topics to be discussed by minister Celso Amorim in Egypt is the summit between South American and Arab heads of state. He also took an invitation form president Lula to Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak inviting him to participate in the Mercosur summit in December. The North African country is interested in establishing a free trade accord with the South American economic bloc.

During an address on Friday, the Brazilian president mentioned a 56% increase in export to the region as an example of government foreign policy and took on the engagement of bringing Brazil closer to other developing countries. To Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce president Paulo Sérgio Atallah, the government is on the right track and president Lula shows engagement in the area.
