Algerian athlete Si Smail Yahia became totally blind at the age of 16. With the aid of his parents and friends, he started practicing sports and in 2005 was second place in the Junior world championship in the 4×100 metre relay. This week, Yahia and other visually impaired athletes are participating in the International Blind Sports Federation World Championship and Games. Competitors from Tunisia are also present, as is the case with judo teacher Mounia Kerkar, and some are from Iraq.
Today, the International Blind Sports Federation World Championship and Games begin in São Paulo. The competition is worth classification for the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games.
