São Paulo – The winners of award Cup of Excellence – Brazil 2018 are produced in two regions of the state of Minas Gerais. In the category Pulped Naturals, for pulped natural beans, the winning beans come from the region Chapada de Minas Gerais. Produced at farm Fazenda Primavera, in the town of Angelândia, they reached 93.89 points in the grade scale of the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA).
In the Naturals category, for dry-processed coffee, the champion was from producer Maria do Carmo Andrade, of farm Fazenda Paraíso, in Carmo do Paranaíba. The product from the region of the Protected Designation of Origin Cerrado Mineiro reached 93.26 points.
The Cup of Excellence – Brazil 2018 results were announced after the award’s international round, which ended this Sunday (21). The closing round took place in Guaxupé, south region of Minas Gerais, and the winners were announced in front of judges from over 10 different countries.
The batches that reached the final round in both categories will be sold at international auctions. According to the organization, there are 100 potential buyers from 40 countries for the Brazilian bags. In 2017, bags of pulped cherry coffee were sold for up to BRL 55,000 (USD 15,520), while those of naturals surpassed BRL 39,000 (USD 11,010).
Pulped Naturals
The winning pulped cherry coffee, from the company Primavera Agronegócios, is of the Geisha variety, produced in Brazil by Leonardo Montesanto Tavares (first, from left to right, in the picture above). “This award proves that hard work is worth it, that dedication is important and that we’re truly professionals in what we do. Beyond the financial aspect, the important thing is to be able to show to the world that the north of Minas also produces excellent coffee,” said the producer.
Other than the champions, other coffees scored over 90 points, when they earn the label presidential coffee. In the Pulped Naturals category, the awarded producers were Reinaldo Garcia dos Santos (Sítio Fortaleza, in Luisburgo, region of Matas de Minas), Empresa Dimap (Fazenda Santo André, in Pratinha, in the region of the Denomination of Origin Cerrado Mineiro), Maria José Junqueira Céglia (Granja São Francisco, in Carmo de Minas, in the region of the Origin Identification Mantiqueira de Minas) and Antônio Macedo Souza (Sítio Santo Antônio, in Piatã, Chapada Diamantina, Bahia).
Naturals
In the Naturals category, for dry-processed coffee, 40 samples were reviewed. “The award is the crowning of a life’s work and dedication, mine, of my family, of everyone involved, many people that believe in coffee and its potential,” said Ismael José de Andrade, who received the trophy in the name of producer Maria do Carmo Andrade.
The coffees that received the label of presidential coffee in this category were Robson Vilela Martins (Fazenda São Pedro, in the town of Cristina, Mantiqueira de Minas), Salvador da Paixão Mesquita (Chácara São Severino, in Piatã, Chapada Diamantina, Bahia), Silvia Dias Cambraia (Fazenda Campo Alegre, in Santo Antônio do Amparo, south of Minas Gerais) and Álvaro Antônio Pereira Coli (Sítio da Torre, in Carmo de Minas, region of Mantiqueira de Minas).
The coffees of Augusto Borges Ferreira (Sítio Fortaleza, in São Gonçalo do Sapucaí, Minas Gerais, in Mantiqueira de Minas) and Alessando Alvez Hervaz (Fazenda Fortaleza, in São Gonçalo do Sapucaí, Minas Gerais, region of Mantiqueira de Minas) also earned the label of presidential coffees.
