São Paulo – Investing in sustainability in the Amazon, Nova Lamy, an enterprise from Ji Paraná, in Rondônia, Brazil, has carved out a niche for itself in the construction market of the Arab countries. The company has exported to Egypt, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
“We began exporting to the Arab market in 2013. On that occasion, we supplied a sizeable amount of Yellow Trumpet Tree wood decking for a project in Kuwait’s police academy,” says Nova Lamy chairman Mário Alferes Filho.
Valéria Totti, the brand’s owner, explains that the company first broke into the Arab market at Index, the furniture and interior design exhibition in Dubai.
She is a designer and went to the expo to exhibit her decoration items. She also seized the occasion to showcase her construction parts catalogs and wound up striking her first Middle East deals. “Now, I want to try to get into Qatar,” the businesswoman says, showing interest in the opportunities that the 2022 FIFA World Cup is creating in the Gulf country.
Totti says that in the Arab countries, her company sells mostly plywood for the naval construction and wood decking. The plywood is used in internal partitions, flooring and interior decoration. The decks are used for pool and pier areas.
Regarding the wood used in manufacturing, Totti makes a point of stating that it’s extracted in an eco-friendly manner and that her business invests in reforestation. “The entirety of our wood originates from sustainably-grown plants. We are planting 1.3 million trees for raw material,” she says.
According to Alferes, Nova Lamy’ produces 2,000 cubic meters of wood per month on average, including its entire portfolio. Products include laminates, sawed wood, treated wood, plywood sheets and others.
“We usually export 40% to 60% of our production,” the executive says. According to him, the best deal they ever made with Arabs was with Kuwait. Alferes notes that the company has shipped product to more than 25 different countries. “The leading buyers at this time are the United States and Germany. However, South Africa is scaling up its purchases,” he says.
