São Paulo – The movie “Until the Birds Return” (2017, 113 minutes), by Algerian director Karim Moussaoui, will open in movie theaters in Brazil this Thursday (17). Even though the movie, which is a French, Algerian and German production, was Moussaoui’s debut, it was selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival last year.
According to the synopsis released by distributor Imovision, the film focuses on three main characters in Algeria, a young and wealthy property developer, a woman divided between reason and emotion, and an ambitious neurologist struggling with his memories. “Three stories that involve us in the soul of a contemporary Arab society,” says the distributor’s website.
The movie trailer (watch below or here) gives us a hint of the dramas of the script, showing a character that wouldn’t rescue a boy getting beaten, a man who is called to take the neighbor’s daughter to marry to a good man (picture above) and the buzz caused by the woman who moved to a new neighborhood and says she was once kidnapped by a terrorist.
The section Un Certain Regard, in which the movie competed, takes place simultaneously to the Cannes official competition, and includes more experimental movies. According to Imovision, the review of the movie by French newspaper Le Monde says that it is “extraordinarily sensitive, precise and evocative. Melancholic and violent. Laconic and stunning.”
“Until the Birds Return” will open in the art circuit of four Brazilian cities: at Reserva Cultural and Espaço Itaú de Cinema – Frei Caneca, in São Paulo; at Estação Net Rio, in Rio de Janeiro; at Reserva Cultural, in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro; and at Espaço Itaú de Cinema and Liberty Mall, in Brasília. Later on, the movie is expected to go to other cities.
Imovision is a distributor of independent cinema and was founded over 25 years ago. It has released over 300 movies in the country. Its catalogue includes renowned movies from Brazilian and foreign directors – from such markets as the famous Iranian movie scene – and productions awarded in film festivals such as Cannes, Venice, Toronto and Berlin.
The script of “Until the Birds Return” was written by Maud Ameline and by director Karim Moussaoui. David Thion was the producer and the cinematography was by David Chambille. The movie lasts 113 minutes and is rated PG-12. The main actors are Mohamed Djouhri, Sonia Mekkiou, Mehdi Ramdani, Hassan Kachach, Nadia Kaci, Samir El Hakim and Aure Atika.
