Rio de Janeiro – The number of active companies in Brazil by December 31, 2016 was 5.05 million, down 1.3% from 5.11 million a year earlier, as per a survey from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Total employee number was down 4% from 53.54 million in 2015 to 51.41 million in 2016.
Commerce, auto and motorcycle repair businesses accounted for 38.4% of all active enterprises in Brazil in 2016, with administrative activities and complementary services at 9.2% of total businesses.
The highest real average monthly wage was in electricity and gas, at BRL 7,263.19. The lowest average wage was in hospitality and food, at BRL 1,363.30.
