São Paulo – JBS, the Brazil-based world leader in protein-based foods, has broken into the fertilizer segment by starting production in a plant in Guaiçara, São Paulo. The enterprise will operate under the name Campo Forte Fertilizantes and was announced on Friday (18) by JBS Novos Negócios.
The announcement comes in a moment when the Brazilian market faces concerns regarding the fertilizer supplier due to Russia-Ukraine war. Russia is a major supplier to Brazil, which imports most of the fertilizers it uses in agribusiness.
Campo Forte will have the capacity to manufacture 150,000 tonnes of organic, organomineral organomineral and special fertilizers by using organic waste and mineral raw material. The operation will serve both companies (B2B) and final consumers (B2C), with a consultative and technical sales proposal, supported by laboratory analyzes and support in making a purchase decision.
The company says that it will be the first Brazilian food manufacturer to use the waste generated in its own operations for the manufacture of fertilizers. JBS Novos Negócios executive director Susana Carvalho (pictured) says the opening has a sustainable purpose. According to the company, the initiative is in line with the Net Zero 2040 commitment, which aims to bring the net balance of its greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2040.
The factory required BRL 134 million [USD 26,5 million]. Initially, the corporate will give precedence to the sale of its merchandise for crops reminiscent of soybeans, corn, espresso, sugar cane, fruit and veggies, in addition to pastures and forests. Carvalho said that the high volume of fertilizer imports in Brazil – which the government aims to change – brings an opportunity for the expansion of the company.
