Sharja – The Shajah Airport in the United Arab Emirates received 3.156 million passengers in the first quarter, a 9.56% growth over the same period in 2018. These numbers were released during the Arabian Travel Market, a tourism event in Dubai, according to information published this Monday (29) by the Emirates News Agency (WAM).
“During the first quarter of 2019, Sharjah Airport’s positive results in terms of passenger numbers, aircraft movement and freight volume,” said Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority according to WAM. “The Emirate of Sharjah has succeeded in strengthening its position in terms of regional and international tourism and trade,” he added.
According to WAM¸ January was the best month in terms of passenger numbers for the airport with 1.122 million passengers recorded, while the highest growth rate – 10.59% – was recorded in March, with 1.079 million passengers.
“The growth achieved by Sharjah Airport, which is in line with the growth in tourism and travel in the Emirate of Sharjah and the UAE,” Al Midfa said. He highlighted that Sharjah aims to welcome 10 million tourists in 2021.
To this end, the airport plans to increase its capacity to accommodate 20 million passengers by 2025.
