São Paulo – The Immigration Museum in São Paulo, Brazil is accepting applications for the 25th Immigrant Fest, due June 2020. Applicants can be immigrant and refugee groups as well as descendants of non-Brazilians. The deadline is January 31, 2020.
Participants can represent their nations through cuisine, dancing, music, art or handicraft. Registrations are available on the Immigration Museum website. The event is designed to celebrate the cultures and traditions that make up the diversity of São Paulo. Last year, over 22,000 people attended.
This year, the cuisine section featured countries like Iraq, Palestine, Syria and Egypt. Also featured was handicraft from Palestine, Syria and Iraq. Dance performances featured groups Sawalef, of Morocco; Bibliaspa, from Iraq; Arab Productions – Canja, of Palestine; and a group from various Arab countries put together by arts and therapies school Espaço Artístico e Terapêutico Malaika.
There were 18 culinary workshops, including one taught by people representing Syria. Handicraft lessons included Arabic calligraphy from Palestine and a workshop on macramé vase holders taught by people from different Arab countries.
