Casablanca – Airports in Morocco handled nearly 10.5 million users in the year’s first six months, an increase of 13% over the same period of last year, according to data released this Tuesday (17) by the Moroccan Airports Authority (ONDA, in the French acronym). The information was published by news outlet Maghreb Arabe Presse (MAP).
In June, Moroccan airports received 1.65 million passengers, a surge of 25.7% in comparison to the same month of 2017.
The Mohammed V Airport, in Casablanca, represented 43% of the country’s total passenger traffic. In the first six months, the airport’s passenger numbers increased 5.7% against the same period of last year, and in June it climbed 20.3% over the same month of 2017. June saw a sharp increase in number of passengers in most of the country’s airports, with growth rates ranging from 15.2% to 231.7% over the same month of 2017, according to MAP.
Local traffic surpassed 1.1 million passengers in the first six months, up 15.4% over last year’s first six months. In June, the growth seen over the same month of 2017 was of 28%.
International passenger traffic reached 9.32 million from January to June, a surge of 12.7% in comparison to 2017’s first six months. In June, the country’s airports received nearly 1.5 million international passengers, up 25.4% in comparison to June of last year.
According to MAP, the numbers reflect the good performance of the European market, which represents over three quarters of international air traffic in Morocco. The number of passengers coming from Europe rose nearly 15% in the first six months. Also stood up the increase in the number of passengers from the Middle East (up 6.2%), North America (up 20.2%) and South America (up 31.3%).
