São Paulo – Poultry exports from Brazil slid in January 2021. Nevertheless, some of the leading Arab importers stepped up their purchases. The Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) reported 35,800 tons shipped to Saudi Arabia, up 2%, with revenue climbing 4% to USD 58.5 million year-on-year in January.
Saudi Arabia was the premier Arab importer of poultry from Brazil in January. The UAE ranked second at 21,700 tons, up 3%, fetching USD 32.8 million, down 2%.
Yemen, Kuwait and Oman came next. Sales to Yemen were up 6% to 9,699 tons and 10.7% to USD 13.9 million. Sales to Kuwait plummeted by 38% to 5,900 tons and 35% to USD 9.5 million. Exports to Oman climbed 8.9% to 5m600 tons and 1.5% to USD 8.3 million.
Total raw and processed poultry exports from Brazil fetched USD 434.4 million in January 2021, down 17.9% from January 2020. Sales were down 9.9% from January 2020.
“Asian importers, which follow the Chinese calendar, made their poultry and pork sales earlier this year. After the Chinese New Year, a new export cycle will begin, and sales to the region are expected to return to the levels seen in 2020. Besides, Brazil’s role in supplying product to countries facing animal health safety crises can also drive up exports,” a statement quoted ABPA chair Ricardo Santin as saying.
