São Paulo – The Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) is receiving applications for the fourth edition of the Sharjah Translation Award ‘Turjuman’. The award highlights books by Arab authors translated into other languages across the world. It aims at encouraging international translators and publishers to pick up titles written by renowned Arab authors, thereby contributing to global appreciation of Arabic literature and enhancing cross-cultural communication.
Submissions must have been published and made available to the public between 2011 and 2020. Applications are accepted until September 1st, 2020. The award is open to international publishing houses that have published translations of an original publication in Arabic. According to the SBA, each publishing house has the right to submit more than one publication. The submission form is available on the Authority’s website.
The total value of the prize is AED 1.3 million (USD 350,000), distributed as 70% for the foreign publishing house that holds the translation rights and 30% for the Arab publishing house that holds the rights of the first edition of the book.
Since its debut during the 35th edition of Sharjah International Book Fair in 2016, the Turjuman Award has contributed to expanding the scope of Arabic publishing, given international readers access to Arabic books, and allowed them to explore this legacy.
The winner will be announced during the upcoming Sharjah International Book Fair, slated to take place in November 4-14, 2020.
