São Paulo – The ambassador of Brazil in Abu Dhabi, Fernando Igreja, attended the opening ceremony of the Sharjah Dates Festival this Wednesday (1) in the UAE. The head of the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce office in Dubai, Rafael Solimeo, was also in attendance.
The festival was kicked off by the chairman of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Abdallah Sultan Al Owais, and will continue until Saturday (4), the eve of Ramadan – the Muslim calendar month during which followers go on a fast from sunup to sundown. One of the purposes of the festival is to celebrate the arrival of this religious month, which will last from May 5 to June 4 this year.
Dates are a must for iftar, the nightly feast during which Muslims break their fast during Ramadan. Growers, distributors and wholesalers offer different varieties of the fruit and its products directly to end buyers or major retailers. According to the Festival’s organizers, special promotions will be available.
The event also features contests, workshops for the public and chefs cooking date-based dishes.
Congress
In addition to attending the festival opening, the Brazilian ambassador met with Owais to discuss Sharjah’s participation in the 11th World Chambers Congress from June 12 to 14 in Rio de Janeiro.
The Embassy has informed that the UAE will be represented in the Congress by the Dubai and Sharjah chambers of commerce.
