São Paulo – Brazilian arms manufacturer SIATT and French company Safran Electronics & Defense announced on Tuesday (8) that they had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate on the development of missile systems, precision-strike munitions and coastal defense systems, among other projects. SIATT is controlled by EDGE, a group based in the United Arab Emirates.
According to information released by EDGE, the cooperation will also include the development and production of solid-fuel rocket motors at SIATT’s facilities in Brazil. Other areas covered by the partnership include inertial measurement and navigation systems, which calculate a vehicle’s position without relying on a satellite network; GNSS receivers (navigation systems); actuators (devices that convert energy into physical motion); electro-optical sights (which project a luminous aiming point within the shooter’s field of view); and sensors.
EDGE Group Managing Director and CEO Hamad Al Marar said the agreement expands the company’s partnerships in Brazil. Alexander Ziegler, head of Safran Electronics & Defense’s Defense business unit, said the agreement brings together complementary capabilities from the two companies.
EDGE Group has been investing in Brazil and, in recent weeks, has announced other agreements with local institutions. On September 3, EDGE completed the acquisition of Akaer, a company that develops systems for sectors including aviation, such as unmanned and electrical systems. In August, EDGE signed a partnership with the Brazilian Navy for maritime monitoring, surveillance and reconnaissance projects. The Abu Dhabi-based company already has other agreements in Brazil: it owns Condor, which develops non-lethal technologies, and has additional partnerships underway with the Navy and the Army.
