São Paulo – The General Administration of Rangelands and Forage of Sudan’s Ministry of Animal Resources began implementing on Sunday (12) a project to restore natural pastures, especially in the localities of Al-Dali and Al-Mazmum, in the southeast of the country. According to the Suna news agency, the project is supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and has as its main objective to increase food security in the country.
The program includes the distribution of pasture seeds, training and capacity building for small farmers so they can restore pathways, fences, shrubs, and tree nurseries to preserve vegetation cover. The project expects that, in this way, livestock productivity can be increased, production and food security for the population can be ensured, and economic growth in these localities can be promoted.
According to the Sudanese news agency, local herders stated that the program will help create a favorable environment for raising animals. It is also expected to contribute to reducing conflicts between farmers and herders, who make up approximately 20% of Sudan’s population.
