The meat packing units account for 30% of sales to the Arab country. The decision, which is reversible, was made on technical grounds.
Exports to the region were down 19% from January through November to USD 2 billion, but the industry association expects a rebound in 2019. Saudi Arabia, the biggest market, is expected to increase its imports again.
Volume shipped was down 1%, with revenue decreasing by 5.5%. The industry association chairman, however, said there are signs of a recovery.
Brazil shipped out over 366,000 tons in October. The poultry farmers’ association says that the data confirms the perspective of recovery.
The country shipped 397,000 tons abroad, down 4.6% over the same month of 2017. However, the volume surpassed 2018’s monthly average.
New criteria for halal slaughtering is one of the main reasons. Saudi Arabia’s and Kuwait’s imports slid 28% and 11%, respectively. The United Arab Emirates increased purchases in 7%.
The month saw 463,100 tons worth of chicken shipped from Brazil. The resumption of sales in the wake of a trucker strike and normalization of statistics from the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services led to the record-breaking result.
