São Paulo – Poultry exports from Brazil climbed 16.4% in July from a year ago, Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) reported on Thursday (5). The United Arab Emirates was the third leading destination and purchased a volume 75.7% higher.
Total raw and processed poultry exports from Brazil reached 424,400 tonnes last months. This was the best result of the year and the third best result in the history of the industry, ABPA said. “Poultry exports in July were a positive surprise,” ABPA chair Ricardo Santin said.
China was the premier importer at 63,100 tonnes, up 4.5% year on year. Japan ranked second at 35,700 tonnes, up 2.6%. The UAE purchased 34,000 tonnes and accounted for the largest increase among the three leading importers.
“Resumption of exports led the UAE to step up imports to 34,000 tonnes a month, up 75% from a year ago. We see that markets are beginning to settle down now, and consumption is getting back to normal in our destinations,” Santin said.
The chair of the association said Brazil is managing to pass on poultry cost increases. Prices of maize and soymeal, which are part of the poultry feed, saw relevant global increases over the last months that translated into higher costs on farms, thus impacting meat prices.
This made revenues from poultry exports climb well above volume. Brazil fetched USD 739.2 million from poultry exports, up 78.4% from July 2020. ABPA said the last the industry posted a value over USD 700 had been July 2018.
Year to date through July, poultry exports from Brazil reached 2.6 million tonnes, up 7.98% from a year ago, fetching USD 4.261 billion, up 15.7%.
