São Paulo – Aimed to raise awareness on the culture and experiences of refugees in Brazil, the Refugee Fair will occur this Thursday (6) in São Paulo. The event takes place in Cidade Universitária and is organized by the student body FEA Social of the School of Economics, Business and Accountancy of the University of São Paulo (FEA-USP)
This will be the fair’s third edition, which will feature typical food and handicrafts stands, roundtables, workshops, and performances. “They are people like us, but are far from home because of a situation they can’t control,” said FEA Social event planner Camilla Martins to Jornal da USP.
The event is free and will occur from 11 am to 5 pm at the student’s hall of FEA. One of the activities will be an Arabic calligraphy workshop. In addition to the typical Arab dishes, the organization says there will be roundtables where invited refugees will share their life stories and experiences in Brazil.
The fair will feature organizations such as Abraço Cultural, which brings together refugee teachers to teach language classes. It will also feature the Refugee Reintegration Institute (ADUS), which also gives language classes, as well as cooking workshops, professional qualification courses, psychological support, and cultural activities.
ADUS coordinator Anas Obeid was a journalist in Syria and came to Brazil in 2015. For the fair, ADUS gathered people from Senegal, Syria, Haiti, Angola, British Guiana, and Venezuela. “I haven’t always been a refugee. I’m just a refugee right now. I’m a human being, a journalist. I’m part of a culture, a family. These events help show these people’s situation,” said Anas to Jornal da USP.
