São Paulo – The films Salt of the Earthand Trash , produced in partnership between Brazil and other countries, will be shown at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, due from October 23rd to November 1st in the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
Salt of the Earth follows the renowned Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado throughout his Gênesis project. From 2004 to 2012, Salgado travelled to 32 extreme parts of the planet, including Alaska, Patagonia, Ethiopia and the Amazon to depict the grandeur and the fragility of nature, and its relationship with man and animals.
The documentary, a Brazilian, Italian and French co-production, was directed by Germany’s Wim Wenders and Brazil’s Juliano Ribeiro Salgado, Sebastião’s son. The outcome of the photographer’s expedition was an exhibition featuring 250 images that is travelling the world, plus a book and a documentary film that will be screened at the Abu Dhabi Festival.
Trash tells the story of three kids who earn their living collecting garbage in a favela in Rio de Janeiro. While picking up trash, the boys find a wallet containing an important code that can change their lives. However, they become targets for the police.
The fiction film is a Brazilian-British co-production directed by Stephen Daldry, featuring famous actors of the likes of Martin Sheen, Wagner Moura and Selton Mello.
The two movies will be featured in the Showcase Audience Choice Award. The winning film will receive a US$ 40,000 prize. The Abu Dhabi Film Festival is held since 2007. This year’s edition will feature 197 movies from 61 countries.
