São Paulo – The Brazilian construction company Andrade Gutierrez has pre-qualified for a tender for the construction of a dam in Egypt, an Arab country located in North Africa. According to information obtained by ANBA, the Brazilian company is going to submit a project in order to bid for the contract alongside a local partner. The work will include a second phase, which is the building of a hydroelectric plant, but the ongoing tender concerns the building of the dam only.
The matter was discussed during the trade mission of the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade that travelled to Egypt, Iran and Lebanon from April 12th to 16th, headed by the minister Miguel Jorge.
News regarding pre-qualification was received by the company last week, but the final result still depends on submission and evaluation of a bid, and should be known within approximately three months.
Andrade Gutierrez has not carried out construction work in Egypt thus far. The construction company, however, has ongoing works in other Arab countries in North Africa, such as Libya, Algeria and Mauritania. In Libya, Andrade Gutierrez won at least three contracts last year, worth US$ 600 million, for urban infrastructure projects such as sanitation and road works near Tripoli, as previously announced by ANBA.
Andrade Gutierrez operates in several areas of the world, in Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa, and is one of the largest private groups in Brazil. The company accounted for 30% of the Brazilian power supply system works, and has vast experience in the field.
In addition to ongoing projects, Andrade Gutierrez was responsible, for instance, for the Itapebi system, on the Jequitinhonha river, in the state of Bahia, with a capacity for 450 megawatts, and for the Três Irmãos dam and power plant, on the Tietê River, in the interior of the state of São Paulo, with a capacity for 807.5 megawatts.
