São Paulo – The art fair SP-Arte, which opened this Thursday (9th) in São Paulo, has more than 4,000 works in exhibition from artists from all around the world, most of them are for sale. At least five Arab artists have their works on display in the fair, which runs until Sunday (12th) at the Biennial Pavilion. Besides the works for sale, the event also has exhibition-only works and presentations.
According to information from the exhibition’s website, Egyptians artists Sabah Naim and Ghada Amer, Algerians Kader Attia and Adel Abdessemed, and Lebanese Tarek Atoui and Mona Hatoum have their artworks on display.
This is the 11th edition of the event, which was created in 2005. From the 140 art galleries that bring works to the exhibition, 57 of them are foreigners and 83 are Brazilian. Among the former, there are galleries from Austria, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, South Africa, Switzerland, United States, United Kingdom, Uruguay, France, Colombia and Chile.
The works of the Arab artists came to the fair through foreigner galleries. The works of Sabah Naim, who does canvas with superimposition of pictures, came to SP-Arte as part of the collection of Galeria Lia Rumma, from Milan, Italy. The galleries Goodner Gallery, from Johannesburg, and Galeria Filomena Soares, from Lisbon, Portugal, brought works from the sculptor, painter and designer Ghada Amer.
The painter Kader Attia and her works in exhibition are represented by Galleria Continua, from San Gimignano, Italy. The works of Adel Abdessemed, who does sculptures, videos and installations, came to Brazil through the gallery David Zwirner, from New York. And the musical experiments of Tarek Atoui are presented by gallery Kurimanzutto, from Mexico City.
The art pieces and installations by Mona Hatoum were brought by galleries White Cube, from London, and Galleria Continua. The Lebanese artist of a Palestine father had an exhibition open at Estação Pinacoteca, in São Paulo, until March of this year. It was her first one in Brazil.
Besides the art works brought by the galleries, SP-Arte will present the Solo space, dedicated to individual shows. In the Performance sector, twelve artists will present 14 of their own performances. The project Open Plan will also exhibit works, with a mix of new and well-known artists. In this section, the proposal is to display art works of large dimensions.
Last year’s edition received 22,000 visitors and the organizers want to match this figure this year.
