São Paulo – Brazil was a highlight in airport traffic in May. According to the figures disclosed this Tuesday (5th) by the Airports Council International (ACI), the Latin America and Caribbean region recorded the strongest passenger traffic growth during the month, driven by a “very strong” domestic demand at Brazilian airport terminals.
Passenger traffic in Latin America and the Caribbean grew by 15.3% in May, whereas worldwide traffic grew by 6.6%. In cargo transportation, the region recorded growth of 14.8% in May, while the global average dropped by 2.5% in international flights and by 0.4% in domestic routes.
In cargo transportation, Brazil was also the highlight. According to the ACI, traffic grew by 33% at the International Airport of São Paulo, in Guarulhos (Greater São Paulo), and by 32% at the International Airport of Rio de Janeiro. Europe was the only region to record an increase in cargo transportation in May, at 0.3%.
As for passenger traffic, Europe recorded growth of 8% in May, followed by the Middle East (6.7%), Asia-Pacific (5.9%) and North America (5.1%). In Africa, there was a decline of 15.3%, mostly due to the political situation in countries located in the northern portion of the continent, especially Egypt, which is a prominent tourist hub.
