São Paulo – January saw 1,190 tons of hatching eggs and poultry genetic material exported from Brazil, the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) reported this Thursday (20). Exports were down 37.2% from January 2018.
Exports dropped due to a spike in domestic demand caused by meat production. “Since poultry meat exports from Brazil went up, Brazil has been prioritizing the breeding of broiler chicks. This was expected as a step to meet domestic and external demand for animal protein,” a press release quoted ABPA executive director Ricardo Santin as saying.
In January, 1,120 tons of hatching eggs were exported from Brazil, down 38.2% year-on-year and grossing USD 4.8 million, down 40.1%. Genetic material exports came out to 73 tons, down 16%, with revenue dropping 33.7% to USD 4.3 million.
