São Paulo – In 2015, 1,542,371 job posts were cut down in Brazil, the worst result since 1992, according to data released this Thursday (21st) in Brasília by the Ministry of Labor and Employment. The numbers take into account formal employment data taken from the General Register of Employed and Unemployed Citizens (Caged).
According to information provided by the ministry and published by Agência Brasil, the sectors with highest cuts of job posts were the processing industry, which cut 608,800 jobs, and the construction industry, with 416,900 jobs cut. The only sector with a positive result was agriculture, with the creation of 9,821 jobs. All regions of the country reduced the level of formal employment, with the total number of formal job positions, on the books and with signed contracts, declining 3.74% to 39,663,114 jobs.
In a press conference, the minister of Labor and Social Security, Miguel Rossetto, admitted that 2015 was a “difficult year”. He said, however, that there are still a high number of jobs in the formal market and that the 2015 performance didn’t destroy the achievements of the last few years.
