Rio de Janeiro e Brasília – Brazil has an estimated population of 201,032,714, according to the latest data from the Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute (IBGE), concerning June this year. According to an IBGE survey, the country has an additional 7,085,828 inhabitants as against July 2012 figures. The data have been released today (29th) in the Official Gazette.
São Paulo is the most populated state with 43.6 million inhabitants, followed by Minas Gerais with 20.5 million residents, and Rio de Janeiro, with 16.3 million people.
The state of Bahia has 15 million inhabitants, Rio Grande do Sul has 11.1 million and Paraná has 10.9 million. Next come Pernambuco, with 9.21 million, Ceará, with 8.78 million, Pará, with 7.97 million, Maranhão, with 6.79 million, Santa Catarina, with 6.63 million, and Goiás, with 6.43 million.
States with less than 5 million inhabitants are Paraíba (3.91 million), Espírito Santo (3.84 million), Amazonas (3.81 million), Rio Grande do Norte (3.37 million), Alagoas (3.3 million), Piauí (3.18 million), Mato Grosso (3.18 million), Distrito Federal (2.79 million), Mato Grosso do Sul (2.59 million), Sergipe (2.19 million), Rondônia (1.73 million) e Tocantins (1,48 million).
In Brazil’s Northern Region there are three states with less than 1 million inhabitants each. Roraima is the least populated state, with 488,000 inhabitants. The state of Acre has 776,500 residents, and Amapá has 735,000.
