São Paulo – Publishing house Tabla, specialized in authors from the Middle East, especially original works in Arabic, launched a new title this Friday (22). The book ‘Memory for Forgetfulness’ [‘Memória para o esquecimento,’ in the Brazilian title] is the third by Mahmoud Darwish (pictured above) to be released by the Brazilian publisher.
Tabla organized a live stream on its YouTube channel this Friday at 6:00 pm BRT (9:00 pm GST) to celebrate the launch. Professor Geraldo Campos and the book’s translator, Safa Jubran, will debate the book. The event will give a certificate of complementary activity.
Jubran is a professor of Arabic language and literature at the University of São Paulo (USP) and one of Brazil’s most prominent Arabic translators. Campos is the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies coordinator at the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS) and was the curator and director of the Arab World Film Festival from 2013 to 2017.
The national poet of Palestine
Mahmoud Darwish is considered the national poet of Palestine and one of the most influential in the Arab world. From the author, Tabla has already released ‘Eleven planets’ [‘Onze astros’] and ‘In the presence of absence’ [‘Da presença da ausência’].
In the forthcoming title, the Palestinian describes a long day in August 1982, during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon and the siege of Beirut. In the book’s description on the publisher’s website, Darwich’s narrative is described as prose, but with many layers, both temporal and thematic.
