From the Newsroom* São Paulo – Brazilian agribusiness exports generated US$ 4.287 billion in September, an increase of 12.2% when compared to the same month last year. The figures were disclosed yesterday (09) by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply. Sector imports, in turn, totalled US$ 601 million, 46.4% more than in September 2005,

Exports to the region generated US$ 9.4 million in September, against US$ 7.5 million in August and US$ 6 million in September 2005. The main destinations were Lebanon, Syria, Tunisia, Algeria, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Sales by Brazilian cooperatives to the Arab countries in the Middle East grew 43% in the first half of this year when compared to the same period in 2005. This is the third greatest market for these organizations, only behind Asia and Europe. The Emirates and Saudi Arabia are among the main destinations in the region for the products.

According to the president at Brazilian Poultry Exporters Association (Abef), Ricardo Gonçalves, the industry is agile and may win a large share of the Egyptian market, which has just been opened. The government of the country allowed imports of chicken in July and Brazil had already exported over 21,000 tonnes up to the middle of September.

After seven months of shrinking export volumes, Brazilian foreign sales of chicken returned to growth last month. The Arab countries imported 155% more in terms of volume when compared to July this year. Brazilian sector exports as a whole totalled US$ 339.34 million and shipments reached 299,150 tonnes, an increase of 12.7% when compared to August last year.

The emirate is considered strategic for entry into the Arab world, according to Ming Chao Liu, manager at Organics Brasil, which is dedicated to the promotion of the sector. The idea is to organize a fair exclusively of Brazilian products in 2007 or 2008. In October, the BioFach fair, in the organic product sector, will take place in São Paulo, southeastern Brazil.

The Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp) promotes today a seminar for the release of the Latin American version of the greatest organic product fair in the world, to take place next month. Brazil wants reach a market share of 10% of the global market, which currently consists of US$ 40 billion. The Arab countries are considered potential buyers of organic items like meats and fruit.

This is one of the conclusions of specialists, government representatives and private sector representatives who are participating, in the city of Goiânia, capital of the midwestern Brazilian state of Goiás, in the 65th Plenary Meeting of the International Cotton Advisory Committee. Demand should remain above supply, benefiting producer countries like Brazil and Egypt.

In August shipments of agribusiness products to the region generated US$ 524.5 million. In the accumulated result for the year, sales have already totalled US$ 2.6 billion, an increase of 16% when compared to the first eight months of 2005.
