The 4th Brazilian Agribusiness Congress, to take place today and tomorrow in the city of São Paulo, in southeastern Brazil, is going to cover themes like bioenergy, infrastructure and foreign trade. The meeting will bring together around 600 participants. Brazil is the largest world exporter of soy, coffee, sugar, orange juice, tobacco and meats, and has 34% of the country GDP connected to agricultural production.

The Brazilian Beef Industry and Exporters Association (Abiec) offered, last Wednesday, a barbecue for 200 Arab importers, in Cairo. The aim was to promote Brazilian beef in the country, one of the greatest importers of the product. Between January and May, Egypt imported 60,300 tonnes of raw cattle beef from Brazil.

This information was disclosed on Wednesday (8) by the minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Roberto Rodrigues, at the opening of the National Seminar on Organic Agriculture, in Brazilian capital Brasília. The minister stated that the country has space available for the cultivation and marketing of products. European consumers pay 25% more for organic food.

The volume exported from Brazil during the first four months of the year is more than double what was sold during 2004. Up to now, about 1,000 tonnes have been shipped directly to the Arabs. The volume yielded US$ 777,000 to the exporters, according to information from the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade.

The objective is to add value to the Brazilian product and increase revenues from sales abroad, currently mainly due to green coffee. Since a programme to stimulate the production of ground and toasted coffee – in 2002 – sales increased in 45.6%, going from US$ 5.7 million to US$ 8.3 million in 2004. The Arab market, which currently imports from Italy and Germany, is in the aim of Brazilian exporters.

The Cooperfrigu cooperative, from the northern Brazilian state of Tocantins, works with 1,600 farmers and slaughters the animals exported to the Arab countries following the Islamic regulations. The monthly production at the cooperative is 3,000 tonnes of beef, apart from 750 tonnes of leather and fat derivatives. Cooperfrigu also sells to countries in Asia, Latin America and South Africa.

The northern state should obtain, this week, from the International Organization of Epizootics (OIE), the status of foot and mouth disease free zone due to vaccination. This status is going to open the doors of the international raw cattle beef with bones and live animal market. Nowadays, the state of Acre can only export canned, matured or boneless beef. This year, Acre is going to slaughter 300,000 heads of cattle. The Russians have already shown interest in purchasing the beef.
