Group Banda de Pau e Corda, from the city of Recife, capital of the northeastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco, is going to represent the culture of the Brazilian northeast at the 3rd Festival of Cultures and Civilizations of World Deserts, scheduled to begin today, in Algiers. The event, whose objective is to generate awareness of desertification, is going to count on exhibitions and presentations from 25 countries.

The theatre methodology developed by the Brazilian Augusto Boal is used by Palestinian group Ashtar and also started being practiced in Sudan. The coordinator of the Theatre of the Oppressed, Bárbara Santos, gave a workshop to Sudanese actors in November. The Palestinians used the method four years and are going to promote in 2007 a festival using the guidelines developed by the Brazilian playwright.
