São Paulo – Next Tuesday (9) will see the journalist and social scientist Demétrio Magnoli deliver the lecture Brazil in the new global cycle: risks and opportunities at the offices of the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce in São Paulo. The event is part of the organization’s once-a-month Lecture Cycle.
Magnoli holds a doctorate degree in Human Geography from the School of Philosophy, Language and Human Sciences (FFLCH) of the University of São Paulo. He edited the books História das guerras and is the author of Uma gota de sangue – história do pensamento racial, among other books.
Magnoli was a columnist for newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo from 2006 to 2013; he currently writes columns for the dailies Folha de S.Paulo, from São Paulo, and O Globo, from Rio de Janeiro. His books cover domestic politics and international relations, his specialty subjects, which he also discusses on cable TV channel GloboNews’ Jornal das Dez newscast.
This won’t be his first time at the Arab Chamber. In November 2014, during president Dilma Rousseff’s administration, he spoke on Brazil’s presence in global trade, and on how the country struggled to join the international supply chain.
He remarked that the country had ceased to prioritize exports to the United States, the majority of which were finished goods, in exchange for a wide-ranging partnership to supply commodities to developing countries, especially China. Since Rousseff’s removal from office, interim president Michel Temer has replaced Foreign Relations officials.
