São Paulo – Farm implements maker Jan ships fertilizer sprayers to Egypt and is looking to enter other markets in the Arab world. The Não-Me-Toque, Rio Grande do Sul-based company also has contacts in Algeria and Tunisia, but so far Egypt is the only Arab destination market.
“We’re interested in selling more to Arab countries,” says the company’s commercial representative for Europe, Africa and Asia, Heitor Kunzler. It has been shipping product to Egypt for at least 15 years now, via a Cairo-based distributor. Jan made the occasional sale to Sudan some five years ago.
Kunzler explains that the company stumbles into aspects like deadlines and transportation costs when it comes to selling to Arab countries. “Those are unfavorable factors,” he says. Turkey, which also supplies implements internationally, and is located near where Arab countries are, and Asia and Europe are also nearer than Brazil. This means the competition have the edge when speedy delivery is needed.
Jan owns four manufacturing units in Não-Me-Toque, where it makes equipment including fertilizers and correctors, grain trucks, brush cutters, leftover grinders, subsoilers and scarifiers, corn pickup attachments, pulverizers and fertilizer sprayers.
Each product line includes several options. Fertilizer sprayers are available with capacities ranging from 600 liters to 25 tons, and grain truck capacity ranges from 6 to 40 tons, according to Kunzler.
Jan preprocesses its inputs in one of its plants and makes wheels in another – which it supplies to other industry players as well, including major nearby companies. A fourth unit makes the equipment that’s sold domestically and internationally under the Jan brand.
The company currently ships between 12% to 15% abroad – the bulk of it to Latin American countries, especially the southernmost countries: Paraguay, Bolivia and Chile. Jan also sells to Europe and Africa, according to Kunzler.
Established in 1960, Jan is a traditional player in the industry. It has a staff of roughly 1,100 direct employees.
