São Paulo – Flamengo fought until the end but could not overcome PSG, losing 5-3 on penalties in the 2025 FIFA Intercontinental Championship, held at Al Rayyan Stadium in Qatar on Wednesday (17). In regulation and extra time, the match ended 1-1. PSG opened the scoring in the 38th minute of the first half after Flamengo goalkeeper Rossi poorly cleared a cross. Kvaratskhelia only had to push the ball into the net.
In the second half, Flamengo pressed PSG until Brazilian defender Marquinhos committed a penalty on forward Arrascaeta. Jorginho converted, leveling the score in the 17th minute of the second half. From that point on, PSG tried but could not break through the Brazilian team’s defense. Even the entry of star Dembélé in the second half was not enough for the French team to extend the lead.
The match went into extra time and then to penalties. Dembélé, named FIFA’s best player in the world on Tuesday (16), missed his penalty, as did Barcola. For Flamengo, only Nicolas de La Cruz converted his kick, while Pedro, Léo Pereira, Luiz Araújo, and Saúl Ñíguez all saw their shots saved by goalkeeper Safonov. With the victory, PSG lifted their first Club World Cup trophy. Flamengo remains with one world title.
