Rio de Janeiro – The Brazilian government had a net operating loss of BRL 512.2 billion (USD 161.4 billion) in 2015, an amount equivalent to 8.5% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The 2014 deficit had been BRL 276.9 billion (USD 87.2 billion), or 4.9% of GDP. The net operating result means revenue minus expenditure, and it does not include net acquisition of non-financial assets.
The numbers are from the government finance report Estatísticas de Finanças Públicas e Conta Intermediária de Governo 2015 released this Friday (5) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), with calculations made in partnership with the National Treasury Secretariat (STN) and the Brazilian Central Bank.
