São Paulo – Brazil’s Fundação Biblioteca Nacional (National Library Foundation) has issued an open call to applications for up to 17 grants, for individual research projects focusing on one or more pieces from its collection. Two of these grants will go to foreign researchers living outside Brazil. Applicants are required to provide proof of fluency in Portuguese language. Registrations are open until July 24th.
The research can focus on pieces from the following fields of knowledge: Applied Social Sciences; Human Sciences; and Linguistics, Languages and Arts. According to the call for entries, researchers interested in other fields will be accepted, provided that the object of research is one or more pieces from the National Library’s collection.
The organization has one of Brazil’s largest documental collections, including drawings, engravings, photographs, books, manuscripts, periodicals, music scores, maps, papers and treatises, among other materials.
The grants for Brazilian and foreign researchers residing in Brazil will last 12 months. Foreigners residing outside Brazil will be awarded 6-month grants. The amount of each grant for the latter category will be R$ 26,400 (US$ 8,165, at current exchange rates), divided into six monthly installments of R$ 4,400 (US$ 1,360).
Non-Brazilian applicants must be enrolled as regular students in PhD courses at recognized academic, educational or scientific institutions in their country of origin.
Foreigners with permanent residence in Brazil must be regular students in graduate or PhD courses at academic, educational or scientific institutions recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Education.
The grant winners must dedicate at least 20 hours a week to the research activities described in their projects. The shortlist will be released on September 18th.
