São Paulo – An international network active in Brazil and devoted to raising awareness of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is accepting registration from Brazilian university students for an internship program in the two countries next year. The network is called Education Network for Human Rights in Palestine/Israel (FFIPP) and the internship is a type of exchange or immersion, including a program with information on Israel and Palestine, and volunteer work at a local organization.
Applicants must be 18 or older with good English conversation skills. The program will comprise one initial guidance week, with meetings and visits to Tel Aviv, Jaffa, Haifa, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Ramallah, Hebron, the Jordan Valley, and refugee camps and settlements near Jerusalem. Then, the intern will spend a month working at a FFIPP partner organization in one of the two countries. The organization can be involved in law, the water issue, economics, mobility, urban planning, and women’s rights, and students will be directed according to their profile.
The schedule also includes meetings with Palestinian and Israeli activists, and applicants can register for the initial week only. Everything is supervised by the FFIPP coordinators. “The Educational Program’s goal is to offer participants the opportunity to experience a geopolitical situation for themselves, and to acquire experience in their field of study,” according to the FFIPP website.
Registrations are open since May 28th and the deadline is August 10th. There is a non-reimbursable R$ 35 (US$ 11) fee and two selection stages. In the first stage, candidates must fill in the registration form, submit a resume in English and proof of registration fee payment. In the second stage, those approved will be interviewed for the final shortlist. The program will take place in January and February 2016, and the shortlist will be announced in September 1st this year. In October, there will be preparatory actions in São Paulo. The internship is being offered for the fourth year.
Participation comes at a cost of US$ 1,700. The amount covers lodging during the entire month and lunch, transportation, and lectures in the initial week. Applicants must also pay for local transportation and food in the following weeks of immersion, amounting to US$ 600 on average. There is also the cost of air tickets and mandatory personal insurance. FFIPP-Brasil offers support to those selected to raise funds via crowdfunding websites, events or other strategies.
The organization has worked in Brazil since 2012 with backing from the Ministry of Foreign Relations. It is a private law, social-educational, non-profit civil association. Besides spreading information, awareness and exchange focusing on the Israeli-Palestinian issue, it does research in the region, holds conferences and exhibitions and supports other institutions.
