Brasilia – President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva declared that he supports the so-called Geneva Accord for a peaceful solution to the situation in Israel and Palestine reached by unofficial Israeli and Palestinian negotiators.
At the moment, Lula is on an eight day tour of the region, but will not visit the area of conflict. However, during a stopover in Egypt (on Tuesday, December 9) he will meet with the Palestinian prime minister, Ahmed Quorei. At that time, Lula will express his position in favor of "a peaceful solution based on reciprocal concessions."
Lula is the first Brazilian head of state to visit the Middle East in 130 years. The Brazilian emperor, Dom Pedro II, visited the region on an unofficial, private trip.
