São Paulo – Pope Leo XIV, head of the Catholic Church, met on Monday (11) at the Vatican with Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil El-Tayeb Idris Abdelhafiz. Sudan is an Arab country located in Africa. The prime minister was also received by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and the Vatican’s undersecretary for relations with states, Monsignor Mihăiţă Blaj.
According to information published by the Vatican’s official news outlet, Vatican News, the meeting at the Secretariat of State addressed relations between the Holy See and Sudan, the contribution of the local Church to the country, and the crisis affecting Sudan. The need for a ceasefire, assistance for the population, and dialogue aimed at ending the conflict and achieving peace were also discussed.
Having led the Catholic Church for only about a year, the pope has already included two Arab countries in his international trips. During Leo XIV’s first foreign mission, in 2025, the pontiff visited Lebanon, an Arab country, as well as Turkey. On a trip to Africa in April this year, Algeria was another Arab country on the itinerary, which also included Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea.
