São Paulo – The Tanger Med Port in Morocco will have a new container terminal. The agreement for construction was signed this Wednesday (30) by Fouad Brini, the port’s president, and Kim Fejfer, CEO of APM Terminals, container platform operator and the company responsible for the now called Terminal 4. The information was provided by the Tangier Mediterranean Special Agency (TMSA), manager of the maritime terminal.
APM will invest EUR 758 million in the container platform, its superstructures and terminal equipment. The estimation is for the terminal to start operations in 2019 and to handle a traffic of 4.2 million TEUs (Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit).
The perimeter of the terminal includes 1,600 meters of dock and 76 hectares of container platform. The concession period is set at 30 years initially. The contract also provides an option for expansion of more than 400 meters of docks and 18 hectares of container platform. If executed, the expansion will require more EUR 140 million in investments and will allow for traffic of more than 1 million TEUs.
The new terminal will serve the Danish shipping company Maersk Line and its partner companies and will be located at Tanger Med II. The granting of the concession completes the allocation of the container handling capacities of Tanger Med II.
