São Paulo – The Food Control Department of the Dubai municipality will host on November 7 and 8 the first edition of the Dubai International Food Safety Conference on Applied Nutrition to discuss ways to prevent obesity and food-related diseases. According to information provided by the event’s organizers, to expand actions focusing on healthy diet is one of the local government’s priorities in the next few years.
The conference will host meetings with the sector’s experts and discussions on predefined themes. The foodstuff industry and food policymakers will also attend the event. Six seminars are already confirmed. The topics on the agenda are: childhood obesity; international strategies for salt reduction in food products; global efforts to reduce the consumption of trans and saturated fats; labels and nutrition facts; food safety and nutrition; and healthy initiatives in restaurants.
For instance, the nutrition labelling seminar will focus on ways of presenting nutrition facts in a more instructive way so as to not cause any confusion among consumers.
Meanwhile, the concern with salt reduction in food products is related to the consumption of the product in the Middle East. According to data released by the organizers, cutting down the daily salt intake by five grams lowers the risk of stroke by 23% and of cardiovascular diseases by 17%. In the Middle East, the salt intake per person is “way above” this level.
The application of healthy feeding methods in schools will be comprehensively discussed, as well as best practices initiatives to sell and serve healthy products. The meeting will also present scientific research and measures focusing on eating habits in several cities worldwide. Simultaneously to the event, the exhibition “Future Food Live”, with innovations by the food industry and projects that can lead to healthier food habits in the United Arab Emirates.
