São Paulo – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) launched this Friday (6) a world tour designed to spread awareness about the issue of asylum. The goal is to garner support for refugees. The tour began in Jordan.
According to UNHCR website, the initiative will arrive in Brazil in June with a Refugee Football Cup, to be played by groups of refugees from 16 nationalities in the cities of Porto Alegre, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
The #WithRefugees World Tour will continue until October 1st, with dozens of events around the planet, putting the spotlight on people who had to leave their homes behind due to war, gun violence or human rights violations.
The schedule includes a fashsion show in Chicago featuring fabric made by Kenyan refugees, a photo exhibit in Paris, a week’s worth of events in South Korea, a judo championship in South Africa, etc. The plan for the tour launch in Jordan included sports activities at the Zaatari refugee camp.
The tour will wrap up with the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award in Geneva, Switzerland. The award was created in 1954 to honor the memory of the first-ever UN high commissioner for refugees, Fridtjof Nansen by acknowledging refugee support projects.
